Why Alaska?
Here is a little background story/timeline:
August 2009
I came out to Anchorage for a 2-week vacation with a friend. The intent was to hike, bike and enjoy the great outdoors (NOT to meet mountain men). Less than 24 hours in, I was madly in love with Alaska...then I met Mike (a bearded mountain man) through a cousin of a friend. Mike was born and raised in Eagle River, AK and had no intentions of leaving.
August - September 2009
Mike the wild land fireman left for a fire in Canada. He said he wouldn't be able to call for several weeks...3 days later I got a text "can I call you?". We talked on the phone every day after that.
October 2009
Mike arrived in Raleigh, NC on a one-way ticket. We planned to hang out and see how things progressed over the winter. Mike was planning to head back to Alaska for another wild land fire season in the spring.
February 2010
We got engaged
March 2010
Made a trip to Anchorage to pack Mike's stuff for his permanent move to NC...found out we were going to be parents.
July 2010
Bought a townhouse in Raleigh, NC
September 2010
Got hitched.
November 2010
Welcomed Stella Jane Riley!
December 2010-December 2011
Mike attended and completed the paramedic program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC.
March 2012
Mike started a job with Wake County EMS as a paramedic.
June 2012
We found out we were going to be parents again.
February 2013
Welcomed John Brennan Riley! Booked tickets to Alaska for May so Mike could test for a position with AFD.
May 2013
Arrived in Alaska. Mike tested for AFD and progressed to the next rounds.
June 2013
Mike went back up to AK from NC for another round of interview/testing/etc. for AFD (It was looking pretty good by this point. We were super excited and nervous.).
July 2013
Mike got offered a job with AFD! We, in less than one week, packed up our entire house into a 7'x12' trailer for Mike to drive from NC to AK. Mike drove; mama and babes flew. Our great Alaskan adventure has begun!
